I Thought These Were Gimmicky
My roommate got an Echo a few years back and I thought it was kind of dumb. Talking out loud to a speaker felt weird. Then I started using it for kitchen timers while cooking. Then for weather updates while getting dressed. Then for controlling lights without getting up. Now I have three of them scattered around my apartment.
The convenience sneaks up on you. But picking the right one depends on which ecosystem you want to commit to.
What’s Worth Buying
Sonos Era 300
This is for people who actually care about audio quality. I heard one at a friend’s house and it genuinely filled the room with sound in a way I didn’t expect from a single speaker. The Dolby Atmos spatial audio stuff is impressive - music feels like it’s coming from everywhere.
Works with Alexa or Sonos Voice Control. AirPlay 2 for Apple users. If you’re building a multi-room audio setup, Sonos is hard to beat.
The downside is the price. It’s a lot for a speaker. Also no Google Assistant option which is frustrating if that’s your preferred voice assistant. But for audio quality? This is the one.
Apple HomePod (2nd Gen)
If your household is all Apple, this makes a lot of sense. Sound quality is legitimately good and it integrates perfectly with iPhones, Macs, and Apple TV.
It also works as a smart home hub for Matter and Thread devices, and now has temperature and humidity sensors built in. Siri has gotten better, though I still find it less capable than Alexa or Google for random questions.
The limitation is obvious - if anyone in your house uses Android, Siri becomes way less useful for them. This is really only for committed Apple households.
Amazon Echo Studio
This is probably the best value for good sound plus smart features. It has Dolby Atmos support and a big woofer that actually produces real bass. Also has a built-in Zigbee hub so you can connect smart home devices directly without extra hardware.
Alexa is extremely capable at this point - tons of skills, works with basically every smart home device, and is responsive. It’s also cheaper than the Sonos or HomePod while still sounding pretty good.
The design is a bit boring and look, Amazon is definitely listening and using data for ads. That bothers some people more than others.
Google Nest Audio
Google Assistant is honestly the smartest voice assistant for answering questions. Ask it something random and it usually figures out what you mean. The Chromecast integration is seamless if you use YouTube or other Google services.
Sound quality is decent but not as powerful as the Echo Studio or Sonos. You can pair two for stereo which helps. It auto-adjusts to room acoustics which is nice.
No line-in for wired connections though, which is annoying. And Google has fewer smart home integrations than Alexa in my experience.
Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)
If you’re not sure you want a smart speaker at all, start here. It’s cheap enough that you won’t feel bad if you don’t end up using it much.
For the price you get a temperature sensor, the ability to extend your Eero mesh network if you have one, and basic Alexa functionality. I have one in my bathroom just for timers and music while showering.
Sound quality is obviously limited - it’s a small speaker. But for voice commands and background audio, it’s fine.

Which Voice Assistant Should You Pick?
Alexa (Amazon)
Most compatible with smart home stuff. Has the most “skills” which are basically apps. Great for shopping obviously. The privacy thing is a valid concern if that bothers you.
Google Assistant
Best at understanding questions and context. If you ask follow-up questions it usually knows what you’re referring to. Works great with Google services. Fewer smart home integrations in my experience.
Siri (Apple)
Most privacy-focused option. Works beautifully within Apple’s ecosystem. But definitely the least capable for general questions and third-party integrations.
What To Think About
If music quality matters: Sonos Era 300 or HomePod. Everything else is a compromise.
If smart home control matters: Echo Studio has the Zigbee hub built in which is genuinely useful.
If you ask lots of random questions: Nest Audio because Google Assistant is the smartest at that.
If you just want basics cheap: Echo Dot and put one in every room.
Multi-Room Audio
Seriously, pick one ecosystem and stick with it. Mixing brands for whole-home audio is a nightmare. I learned this the hard way trying to get a Sonos and an Echo to play nice.
My Take
For most people, the Echo Studio is the sweet spot. Good sound, smart home hub built in, capable assistant, reasonable price.
Want the best audio quality? Sonos Era 300, but you’ll pay for it.
Not sure if you’ll even use it? Get an Echo Dot first and see if the smart speaker thing sticks for you.
