Why Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable
I know, I know. You’ve heard it a million times. But sunscreen really is the most important skincare product you can use. Everything else, the serums, the retinol, the expensive creams, means nothing if you’re not protecting your skin from UV damage.
I was lazy about sunscreen in my early twenties and I’m already seeing the consequences. Sun spots that weren’t there before, uneven skin tone, the beginnings of fine lines. My dermatologist basically said “wear sunscreen every day or accept what’s coming.” That was motivating.
The good news is modern sunscreens are actually pleasant to wear now. No more white cast, no more greasy mess. Here’s what I’ve been using and recommending to friends.
Our Top Picks
1. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 100
When you’re going to be outside for extended periods, this is what you want. SPF 100 sounds excessive for daily wear, but for beach days or hiking, the extra protection makes sense.
It absorbs surprisingly fast for a high SPF formula. Doesn’t pill under makeup, which was a problem I had with other thick sunscreens. Water-resistant for 80 minutes, so you don’t have to reapply constantly at the pool.
Not cheap, but La Roche-Posay has a solid reputation with dermatologists. I trust it when I’m getting serious sun exposure.
2. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40
This one changed my relationship with daily sunscreen. It’s completely invisible, no white cast at all, and it actually works as a makeup primer. Before this, I’d skip sunscreen on days I wore makeup because I hated the texture. Now I don’t have that excuse.
SPF 40 is enough for daily wear when you’re mostly indoors. If you’re going to be outside for hours, I’d use something stronger. The tube is small for the price, but a little goes a long way.
They claim it also protects against blue light from screens. I’m not totally sure how much that matters, but it’s a nice bonus I guess.
3. EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
If you have acne-prone skin and every sunscreen breaks you out, try this one. The niacinamide actually helps calm your skin rather than clog it. I used this for a year after getting frustrated with sunscreens causing breakouts.
It does have a slight white cast on darker skin tones, which is annoying. And if you apply too much, it pills. You have to find the right amount for your face. But once you figure that out, it’s one of the better options for problematic skin.
4. Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30
Made specifically for darker skin tones with no white cast guaranteed. I recommended this to a coworker who’d basically given up on sunscreen because everything made her look ashy. She loves it now.
It’s moisturizing, smells nice, and absorbs quickly. The SPF is lower at 30, which is the minimum recommended. For extended sun exposure, you might want something stronger, but for daily wear it works.
Not water-resistant though, so not ideal for swimming or heavy sweating.
5. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 70
The budget option that actually works. Available at every drugstore, affordable enough that you won’t ration it, and solid protection. This is what I keep in my car for unexpected sun exposure.
It does have that classic sunscreen smell that some people hate. And it can sting if it gets in your eyes, more than some other formulas. But for the price and protection level, it’s hard to beat.

Sunscreen Types Explained
Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They’re usually more cosmetically elegant, invisible, and layer well under makeup. You need to apply them about 15 minutes before sun exposure.
Mineral sunscreens (also called physical) sit on top of your skin and reflect rays. They work immediately, which is nice. The downside is they’re more likely to leave a white cast, especially on darker skin.
Hybrid formulas combine both types. Often a good middle ground.
Daily SPF Tips
Use about a quarter teaspoon for your face. Most people under-apply, which reduces the actual protection you’re getting. Reapply every two hours when you’re outdoors, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
SPF 30 is the minimum for daily use. Higher SPFs give you somewhat more protection, but the difference between 50 and 100 isn’t as dramatic as the numbers suggest. The most important thing is using enough and reapplying.
Bottom Line
For daily wear, Supergoop Unseen makes it easy. Invisible, lightweight, and actually feels nice on your skin.
