Sheets Actually Make a Difference
I never thought I’d care about bed sheets until I accidentally bought nice ones. Stayed at a friend’s place who had Brooklinen and spent the next week annoyed at my own bed. Turns out spending more than $30 on sheets is worth it.
The confusing part is all the terminology - thread count, weave types, cotton types. I’ll try to break it down without being too boring about it.
The Ones Worth Buying
Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheet Set
These are the ones that ruined me. 480 thread count long-staple cotton with a sateen weave, which basically means they feel silky and smooth. They started out soft and somehow got softer after washing.
Deep pockets that actually fit my thick mattress without popping off in the middle of the night. Lots of color options if you care about that sort of thing.
If you’re the type who likes crisp, hotel-style sheets, these might feel too silky for you. That’s really the only complaint I have.
Parachute Percale Sheet Set
This is what you want if you like that cool, crisp hotel sheet feeling. Egyptian cotton with a percale weave makes them super breathable. My partner runs hot and these are the only sheets that don’t make them kick covers off at 3am.
The downside is they wrinkle more than sateen. I’ve basically accepted that my bed will never look perfectly smooth. The matte finish looks nice though, kind of classic.
OEKO-TEX certified which means no sketchy chemicals, if that matters to you.
Casper Hyperlite Sheets
For anyone who’s constantly overheating at night. TENCEL Lyocell blend with some kind of open weave that actually keeps you cool. I haven’t tried these myself but my sister lives in Arizona and says they’re the only sheets she can sleep on in summer.
They’re more delicate than cotton so you need to be a bit careful with washing. And they’re definitely not cheap.
Target Threshold Performance Sheet Set
The budget pick that doesn’t feel cheap. 400 thread count cotton with built-in cooling technology. I had these in my guest room and honestly they’re solid for the price.
Not quite as luxurious feeling as the premium options, but they hold up well in the wash and come in tons of colors. If you’re not ready to spend $200 on sheets, start here.
Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set
Bamboo sheets that are actually good, not the cheap scratchy kind you find on Amazon. 100% viscose from bamboo, naturally hypoallergenic. Oprah apparently loves them, which is why you’ve probably seen them everywhere.
They’re an investment but supposedly great for sensitive skin. Temperature regulating so they work year-round.

Some Stuff About Sheets
Weave Types (the short version)
- Sateen - Silky, has a bit of sheen, warmer feeling
- Percale - Crisp, matte, cooler feeling
- Jersey - Like a t-shirt, stretchy and cozy
- Flannel - Fuzzy, warm, great for winter
Thread Count Doesn’t Matter That Much
I know, I know. But honestly anything between 300-600 is fine. Those 1000+ thread count sheets are usually just marketing. The quality of cotton matters way more than the number.
Materials Worth Knowing
- Long-staple cotton - Soft, breathes well, durable
- Egyptian cotton - Premium version of the above
- TENCEL/Lyocell - Cool, eco-friendly
- Bamboo - Soft, good for allergies
- Linen - Gets better over time, very breathable but wrinkly
Taking Care of Them
- Wash before using (always)
- Warm water, gentle cycle
- Don’t use fabric softener - it makes them less breathable
- Tumble dry low
- Having two sets and rotating extends their life
My Recommendations
For most people, Brooklinen Luxe is probably the sweet spot between price and quality.
If you wake up sweating, try the Casper Hyperlite or Parachute Percale.
On a budget? Target Threshold sheets are surprisingly good.
If you want to splurge on sustainability, Cozy Earth is worth looking at.
Prices depend on bed size, so check for your specific size.
