Why I Finally Pulled the Trigger on Holbrooks

I’d been eyeing the Oakley Holbrooks for probably two years before actually buying them. Kept telling myself I didn’t need another pair of sunglasses, but after sitting on a cheap pair from Amazon and crushing them, I decided to just go for it.

The short version? They’re solid. Not magical, but genuinely well-made sunglasses that I reach for almost every day now.

Build and Durability

The O-Matter frame feels different from regular plastic - there’s a slight flex to it that makes me less paranoid about breaking them. I’ve accidentally dropped them on concrete twice (once in a parking lot, once getting out of my car), and they survived both times without a scratch. That alone justified the price for me.

The Prizm lenses are where Oakley really earns their reputation. Everything looks sharper and the contrast is noticeably better than my old sunglasses. Whether that’s worth the premium is debatable, but I personally notice the difference when I’m driving or at the beach.

Are They Worth the Price?

This is where I hesitate a bit. At around $150-180 depending on the lens option, these aren’t cheap. I spent a while comparing them to cheaper options, and honestly? For casual wear, you could probably get away with $50 sunglasses.

But I wanted something I wouldn’t have to replace every year. The build quality here suggests these will last, and Oakley’s warranty is pretty generous if something does go wrong.

Styling Thoughts

The Holbrook design is pretty iconic at this point - that squared-off shape works with most face types. I have a pretty average face shape and they fit well without looking too big or too small.

One thing I wasn’t expecting: they’re a bit heavier than my old sunglasses. Not uncomfortable, but noticeable for the first few days. You get used to it.

What I Like

  • The Prizm lenses genuinely improve clarity
  • Frame feels durable without being stiff
  • Classic design that doesn’t scream “sporty”
  • Fits comfortably even after wearing for hours

What Could Be Better

  • The price stings, especially if you want polarized
  • Case that comes with them is pretty basic
  • Not much temple grip, so they can slide if you’re sweating
  • Replacement lenses are also pricey

Would I Buy Them Again?

Probably, yeah. They’re the kind of sunglasses where you pay more upfront but don’t have to think about replacing them for years. If you’re tired of going through cheap pairs, the Holbrooks are a reasonable upgrade - just wait for a sale if you can.
